Political Science

Do you look forward to election season? Are you excited to watch the presidential debates? Do you want to make a lasting difference in politics? Then the MVNU Political Science program is designed for you.

Political Science is one of the most dynamic and versatile degrees in the liberal arts. As a Political Science major, you'll master the critical thinking, analytical, and writing skills necessary to prepare you for success in a variety of career options — from higher education to media to government policy and more.

  • Respect for diversity — Faculty in this program are devoted to cultivating a hospitable environment for students who hold diverse political views, which leads to enlivening discussion and better prepares all students to make a real-world impact.
  • Student-professor interaction — This small, tightly knit community of majors allows for close interaction between students and faculty. You can be sure that your professor will have time to provide you with needed assistance on a one-on-one basis.
  • Internship opportunities — You will have the opportunity to spend a semester in Washington, D.C. as part of CCCU’s American Studies Program, where you will gain hands-on political experience working with state representatives from your preferred political party.
  • Relevant classroom skills — Classroom experiences are focused on strategies of analysis and research, as well as quality leadership and communication practices. This will allow you to develop concrete, marketable skills that will prepare them to excel in careers inside or outside of politics.
  • Dr. Terilyn Johnston-Huntington
    • Assistant Professor of Political Science
  • Dr. Michael Sherfy
    • Assistant Professor of History
  • Dr. William Wantland
    • Professor of History, Department Chair

Washington, D.C. — The American Studies Program in Washington D.C. allows students to spend a semester studying while interning for political leaders, such as the Speaker of the House. This is a great way to get your foot in the door of the political world while gaining hands-on experience that will stand out on your résumé. You’ll also earn a full semester’s worth of course credit (16 hours), which can be applied to a major in Political Science or History or to a minor in Public Policy.

Travel is an important part of on-campus courses, as well.  In recent years, Political Science faculty have led field trips to visit the U.S. Capitol and major national landmarks in Washington, D.C.; to meet with state legislators and MVNU alumni at the Ohio Capitol in Columbus; and to explore the presidency at the James A. Garfield National Historic Site in Mentor, Ohio.

All MVNU students are also invited to participate in our many other service and learning trips, some of which are to Spanish-speaking countries.

MVNU has many endowed scholarships available for students of a wide variety of backgrounds and majors.

A degree in Political Science from MVNU opens the door to a wide range of career options. You could work in the offices of an elected official (or become one!); manage a political campaign; pursue graduate studies in law or business; go on to work as a lobbyist, paralegal, immigration officer; or follow one of a long list of other career paths associated with this degree.

Just look at what MVNU graduates in Political Science have done already. While at MVNU, they have landed internships in Washington, D.C., with U.S. Congressmen (including the Speaker of the U.S. House) and advocacy groups such as the National Women’s Political Caucus, as well as locally with the Mayor of Mount Vernon. After graduating from MVNU, our majors have gone on to work in the office of the Governor of Ohio and the State Senate President of Maine, and to pursue graduate degrees in law and other fields.
